NEW ZEALAND
JET POWERED WATCHTOWER 11.3 TOWS 9 M, 220 TONNE FISHING TRAWLER TO SAFETY
Coastguard Nelson (NZ) recently put their jet-powered NAiAD Watchtower 11.3 to the test during a demanding real-world rescue operation at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Tasked to assist a disabled commercial trawler carrying a significant load — approximately 220 tonnes of displacement — the crew demonstrated just how capable the Watchtower platform is in challenging conditions.
THE INCIDENT
Coastguard Nelson was deployed to assist a 9 metre, heavily laden fishing trawler that had suffered propulsion failure near the northern tip of the South Island. With the vessel drifting and unable to manoeuvre, the situation required a fast, highly controllable response craft with enough authority to manage a complex tow.
The call-out reflects the type of scenario Coastguard crews train for — unpredictable conditions, tight margins, and high stakes for both vessel and crew.
THE RESPONSE
The jet-powered Watchtower 11.3 was tasked for the rescue. Its combination of high thrust, precise low-speed control, and a stable, predictable NAiAD hull made it ideal for a complex tow.
Operational advantages demonstrated:
-
Jet propulsion for safe, high-control manoeuvring around a disabled vessel
-
Predictable, high-thrust manoeuvrability ensured control while taking the tow line
-
Exceptional seakeeping, maintaining course and stability under load
-
Shallow draft allowed safer access during the approach phase
THE RESULT
The Watchtower 11.3 successfully secured the tow and transported the trawler to safety — a notable achievement given the vessel’s size and mass.
The teamwork, professionalism, and vessel-handling skills of the Hohapata Sealord Rescue crew were instrumental to the operation, reflecting the dedication and expertise of Coastguard Nelson’s highly trained volunteers.
This real-world outcome underscores the Watchtower’s ability to operate beyond patrol and response duties, delivering serious capability across rescue, tow, and support missions.
WHY IT MATTERS
This mission reinforces what operators already know:
NAiAD platforms are engineered for the moments that matter most.
Reliability, stability, and control — proven not in theory, but on the water.
